Raspberry Pi

The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card-sized single-board computer developed in the UK by the Raspberry Pi Foundation with the intention of teaching basic computer science. Quite luckily, a huge amount of people got inspired by this PC that is so small and at the same time fully functional. It turned out that there is a huge number of applications, where it can be embedded (shocking ideas can be found on the community pages).

The project that we started working on, is one with more practical meaning. It is about protecting grandma Dena's tomatos. Grandpa Nikola and she, being in their 70s, have a small garden, which is unfortunately on the other side of the village, quite away from their house. Although the soil in the valley between the Balkan mountain and Sredna Gora is blessed and fertile, so that everyone could grow what they need, there are still people, that steal oldmen's crop. We ourselves, living so far away, can do little to prevent that. This is what inspired the idea in us to apply a Pi as a guard. It might not sound serious to you, but this is a quite realistic project, can and will be done. There is great face recognition software that runs on the Raspbian, the two USB slots will be used for the internet stick and the cam. The photos will be put in a dropbox or posted on grandpa Nikola's facebook profile - we are still to decide. Below, in the Story In Images you can see me testing and booting up the Pi. I will keep you posted on the progress of that project.
